What To Pack In Your Baby Hospital Bag

What To Pack In Your Baby Hospital Bag

It’s your first baby and you’re not sure what you will need, might need, or want to have in your hospital bag for the big day. While many hospitals provide you with the necessities, you will want some additional supplies, comfort items, and more. From diapers, outfits, to items just for mom, here is a list of the top items you should include in your hospital bag.

Things To Know Before You Arrive

It’s important to be aware of the different rules your hospital or birthing center has in place. Some will be strict about visitors, especially with Covid-19 protocols. If possible, have a list of allowed guests set up with the hospital before time.

If you’re going to have your baby in a super busy hospital they might send you home if you show up before you’re 4cm dilated. This is because another mother could show up further along and they might need the bed. The hospital will typically let you know beforehand if they have any specific rules around this. If you’re unsure whether or not you’re in active labor give them, or your doctor a call.

If you are interested in getting an epidural, get it early. Sometimes while moms are deciding whether or not they want the epidural the window comes and goes and the little one makes their grand entrance. Also, keep in mind there is usually only one anesthesiologist available so sometimes it’s better to act fast in case you end up in a line with 10 other moms-to-be.

Hospital Diaper Bag Must-Haves For Mom

Every hospital or birthing center does things a little bit differently, but these are some of the top items you will want with you for the big day.

  • Your birth plan and any paperwork you’ve been asked to complete by the hospital and/or for insurance
  • Slippers and socks
  • Robe or pajamas that can unbutton for breastfeeding
  • Nursing bras
  • Old underwear
  • Loose, comfy clothes to wear home
  • Toiletries, including hair elastics
  • If you plan to use the shower or Jacuzzi: a loose bra or top for you, swimwear for your partner
  • Lip balm, moisturizer
  • Nursing pads, nipple cream, maxi pads
  • Laptop (or tablet for movies)
  • Phone & laptop chargers
  • Flip-flops for the shower
  • Pillow & blanket
  • Snacks and drinks
  • Music, books or magazines, games, playing cards
  • Notebook and pen

Sometimes labor can go by in a blink of an eye, and sometimes it can last for literal days. Bring things that not only give you comfort but things that can keep you entertained. Create a birthing playlist full of podcasts and songs that keep you calm and centered.

Don’t forget about your partner. They will most likely be sleeping sitting up or on a pull-out couch, so bring a pillow from home and a cozy blanket.

Hospital Diaper Bag Must-Haves For Baby

There usually isn’t too much you need for your newborn other than a couple of essentials. Most hospitals offer the baby’s first few diapers and maybe even a onesie. If you’re unsure it never hurts to have a few extra outfits and diapers to be safe. With the Yuuma diaper bag, you’ll have room for it all.

A Going Home Outfit

Make your baby’s first outfit an easy one to put on and take off for diaper changes. Pack a couple of options to see what will fit and what is easiest for mom and dad to work with, or in case of a few diaper leaks. In our experience, a button-up or tie-up onesie is always a safe bet. Pair with a little baby beanie, some socks, and mitts.

A Cozy Blanket & Receiving Blankets

You will want a soft blanket to wrap around your new baby and to cuddle with them. Bring a couple of receiving blankets as well to swaddle the baby. These are also great to clean up little milk or drool messes. A swaddled baby is also best for when you have visitors and the baby is being passed from arm to arm.

Package of Newborn Diapers

Babies go through a lot of diapers, even in their first few hours. Pack a box in the car, or bring it with you in your vegan leather Yuuma diaper bag. Our bag has many pockets to pack full of diapers as well as an open middle compartment. Mom or dad can wear the Yuuma vegan leather diaper bag like a backpack, so pack it full and wear it comfortably.

Package of Unscented Baby Wipes

Fresh baby skin is sensitive, so start off with gentle, unscented baby wipes. Make sure to bring some baby powder as well. It’s important to keep our baby’s bottoms clean and dry to avoid rashes.

Vegan Leather Changing Mat

Depending on the setup of your hospital room, you might need to change the baby’s diaper on the bed or another surface. This is why you should never leave home without a Yuuma vegan leather changing mat. Not only do they help protect your newborn baby’s fresh skin from different surfaces, but the faux leather is so soft and comfy for them to lay on. They are super easy to clean and carefully roll or fold back up to easily slide into your Yuuma diaper bag.
